Summer temperatures hit 40°C; winter frosts prune weak shoots. The microclimate between Peso da Régua and Pinhão receives half Lisbon's rainfall, concentrating sugars that survive fortification with 77% grape spirit.
Combined Douro Valley wine tours pull visitors from Porto's azulejo-clad Ribeira district to family-run quintas where fermentation still happens in granite lagares. Tasting rooms occupy stone manor houses built during the 18th-century boom. The river route passes beneath the N222 highway, voted the world's best driving road in 2015, and threads between villages like Pinhão, where the train station displays 25 hand-painted tile panels depicting harvest scenes. Rail service opened in 1879, linking Porto to the Spanish border and making wine export viable year-round.
